About Us
Mission Statement
The mission of the Youth Symphony of Kansas City is to provide
educational opportunities for young musicians by performing before
community-wide audiences and by inspiring excellence in performance.
Goals
The Youth Symphony of Kansas City strives to meet the individual needs
of all of our students. We feel that each student is important and
offers something unique, as a musician and as a person. Rehearsals,
along with concerts, are the heart of our Youth Symphony program.
Rehearsals are held once a week on Sunday afternoons during the school
year. Youth Symphony
ensembles perform literature from all periods. Sectional rehearsals with
professional musicians enhance our program. The hard work culminates in
concerts performed in prestigious
venues throughout the Kansas City area.
We encourage our students to work hard and to develop high standards of
performance, giving them pride in their accomplishments and inspiring in
them a love of music. The Youth Symphony of Kansas City experience also
enriches the education provided by individual instruction and school
music programs. Each Youth Symphony musician must
participate in his/her school music program, if available, on the
instrument he/she plays in the Youth Symphony.
Staff and Board
The Youth
Symphony Board of Directors is comprised of community volunteers from
some of the leading corporations and organizations in the Kansas City
area. Parent and student representatives also participate on the
Board.

Touring History
The Youth
Symphony Orchestra continues a tradition of extensive touring.
The most recent tour was the Symphony Orchestra's tour to Italy in
June 2006.
In 2004 the orchestra toured in Eastern Europe. In the United
States, the Symphony Orchestra has performed in Chicago,
Washington, D.C. and twice in New York City, once for the 1964
World's Fair and once in Carnegie Hall. The Symphony
Orchestra has also toured England and Spain. The Symphony Orchestra was one of eight
orchestras invited to participate in the 1996 International Youth
Symphony Festival in Banff, Canada.
The
Youth Symphony exchanges concerts with neighboring youth symphonies.
This year the Philharmonic West & Philharmonic East Orchestras will travel to Oklahoma City for a weekend of rehearsals, fun and concerts
with the Oklahoma City Youth Symphony.
Diversity
The
Youth Symphony celebrates the broad diversity of backgrounds of our
musicians. Musicians come from many backgrounds, from all over the
Kansas City metropolitan area and from neighboring communities,
bringing a social richness to the musicians' experience and education.
